It was about a hundred years ago that the town of Launceston was founded in New York, There were two main families that decided to set up schools on opposite ends of the city. Messner to the North and Trinidad to the South. No, it wasn't one school for the most uptown kids and one for the downtown ones. Both schools accepted students from both sides, it was just about which side of the cut off that you lived on. Sure, some kids from the wrong side used to cross over to go to the other school, but that started some tension.
Suddenly it seemed as though those who had crossed over were being hated by their former friends and classmates. After all, they all shared a school until they reached ninth grade. It seemed as though a line was splitting the city's youth in half. Pranks were being pulled and different spots in the town were being claimed for different schools. It was almost like a full out war without so much death. Of course, there were the times when some kid went off the deep end and would start a shooting, but that had only happened twice. There had also been some gang violence more recently.
The city was able to keep these things quiet and when the schools turned into boarding schools as well as day schools parents were fine with sending their kids off. Most of them came back. In all, Launceston wasn't that horrible of a place to be. There just seemed to be a few actual things lately.
Of course up until the past few years things had been kept rather quiet. The kids still fought, but for the most part, it wasn't anything serious. Sure, during sports the two ended up getting rather competitive. The two schools seemed equally matched in that department. They also fought academically, still they were pretty much matched.
With all the statistics, it seemed that if the two schools were to join together than they would be one of the best schools in the country. But it would never work, there was just too much tension, too much pride, and too much that had gone on between the two schools.
Over the summer the boards of each school got together. They were trying to figure ways to gap the bridge between the two schools. The idea that they came up with was that they would have each student paired with one from the other school. Perhaps this would show how alike they were. All the letters would be private and they didn't even have to give the pen pal their names.
It was all that they could think of and they hoped that it would work out, or else the fate of the two schools could be disastrous.
